Do Now is a strategy that promotes classroom efficiency – one step on the way to effective classroom management. It is important to have an efficient classroom in order to maximize learning time, increase access to learning, and give students the opportunity to self-manage. Do Now is effective at maximizing learning time because it provides an opportunity for students to begin working the moment they step in the door. It is also effective at increasing access to learning because it creates the organization that is required for effective learning, as well as promoting self-management because it gives students control over the way the day begins, since it begins the same way every day. The effects of an efficient learning environment are far-reaching and include a better classroom culture and a positive work environment, both requirements of a well-managed classroom.
As further described previously in The 4Ms, Do Now is also a great strategy for combining mastery and performance-goal mindsets. When the goal of the Do Now is to review the material from the day before, it makes sure that students mastered the material in such a way that they can perform well on an assessment.
Another way to view the Do Now strategy is that it sets clear expectations, develops a routine, and helps with organization. All three of these are important strategies when working with students with disabilities.
1) For students with specific learning disabilities, the common characteristics are academic difficulty and processing deficits. Do Now is a way for these students to gain an extra level of organization by preparing for what is about to happen during the class period.
2) For students with ADHD, the common characteristics vary, but include hyperactivity and inattentiveness. Do Now is also a way for these students to get help with organization, as well as to create a routine that makes it easier for them to pay attention because they know what is expected, since it is expected every day.
3) For students with emotional disabilities, common characteristics include inappropriate behaviors, unhappiness, and fears. Do Now is a way to provide the stability that these students need to feel comfortable in the environment, as well as the clear expectations that let these students know that the environment is not going to change.
4) For students with Autism, the common characteristics include communication difficulties, restricted interests, and troubled social interactions. Do Now is a way to maximize consistency, the arguably most important need of these students.
